Can You Apply CA Glue Over Shellac?

Yes. Cyanoacrylate (CA) glue can be applied over shellac, and the combination can work very well for woodworking, woodturning, pen making, inlays, model making, repairs, and other applications.

Be Careful With CA Accelerator

What About Large Wooden Parts?

Extra consideration is necessary for larger wood components.

Cured CA forms a relatively hard and rigid film, while wood expands and contracts as temperature and moisture conditions change. Shellac and CA also have different mechanical properties.

On larger pieces, particularly those exposed to changing humidity, a very thick and rigid CA coating over shellac may have a greater risk of cracking, checking, or intercoat delamination.

Small turned pieces, such as pens, typically experience less dimensional movement than large bowls, slabs, or furniture components.

Professional Application Recommendation

For repeatable commercial or production use, do not assume that every shellac and CA combination will perform identically.

Shellac formulations can differ in wax content, solids, additives, solvent composition, film thickness, and surface properties. CA formulations also vary in viscosity, cure speed, flexibility, and additives.

Before approving a process, test the actual materials under production conditions, including:
